What’s it Made Of? And What It’s Not

Usually you’re not provided with the choice of whether or not you’ll use a fire retardant, and that’s why this one differs from many. And, it’s the same price whether you get it with or without.

This White Lotus Futon is one made up of pure layers of Green Cotton rather than layers of chemical pads and springs. This futon uses only “Green” Cotton (no poly pad fillers, unidentifiable materials, or “cotton-like” substances). Green Cotton is unusable by the textile industry because of its unprocessed nature. Unprocessed like uncertified? No, not quite. The mainstream bedding industry requires over processing and chemical treatments to maintain safety compliance and competitive pricing, and White Lotus has found a way to escape the toxic loop.

With the heightened awareness that some manufacturing practices are not good for us or the environment, White Lotus brings forth a solution. In this futon they’ve used Green Cotton. “Green” is often used in the same way as “Eco-friendly”…So what does it mean? It means that either a product or way of living does not have a detrimental effect on the environment. In this case, the product is made from excess clean cotton BEFORE  it’s been treated, thereby not harming you or your loved ones with chemicals. And because White Lotus is using excess materials that would otherwise be wasted, the process is conservative and reverent of our earth-provided materials.

Fire Retardant Options

This All Cotton Futon Is Offered With OR Without a Fire Retardant

WITHOUT a Fire Retardant

This option is for those who can provide a Doctor’s Recommendation in a Prescription Form. Room Doctor is the direct contact to send the prescription to after some initial contact with us has been made.  The Doctor’s Prescription must say something to the effect of: “My patient requires a chemical free futon.” Call 866-766-6362 to find out more. (The prescription must be received before the processing of the order will begin, and you’ll have a few physical conversations with our representatives to be sure this is handled legitimately on your behalf prior to any document exchanges).

WITH a Fire Retardant

For those not in a position to acquire a Prescription, there’s another alternative. Going Natural or Organic is an expensive transition, and sometimes we just need to start somewhere; this futon can help you do that. If you get this futon with the retardant, you can take comfort knowing that it is the least offensive of all fire retardants commonly used. Boric acid surprisingly contains antiseptic properties and greatly diminishes the potential for the growth of fungi and bacteria. Numerous test show that it is no more toxic than table salt, and chances are this treatment is less harsh than most others given the White Lotus standard.

Other Options to Consider

Aside from this ALL Cotton Futon, White Lotus offers us Wool Options like Green Cotton & Wool Dreamton, Dreamton Boulder and Dreamton with a Foam Core. Why Wool? Because Wool serves as a Chemical-Free Fire Retardant. (It’s an added bonus that it moderates your body temperature in both warm and cool conditions).

You can get any White Lotus futon in a Boulder Style, and the term Boulder means that it has more materials and almost double the stitching and tufting, which by default makes the futon very taught and very firm with little give.

Green Cotton Vs. Organic Cotton

Green Cotton is not certified Organic Cotton. Green Cotton is Eco-friendly CLEAN (chemical-free) cotton that serves as a non-toxic and affordable alternative to the 100% Organic Options. White Lotus has structured their business and their manufacturing processes around reducing the use of chemicals while conserving and revering our natural resources, and we think they’ve done an outstanding job!

Futon Vs. Mattress

Sometimes these terms can be loosely interchangeable, but Not with White Lotus products. Mattresses are for Beds, are sold at a baseline 6” Thick (although they can be custom made to be up to 9” thick with an altered price), and have 4 handles sewn onto the side panels for easy moving and flipping. Futons are for Futon Frames, have no side panels or handles, and are sold at a standard 5” Thick (5” thickness is the maximum for futons because they need to be able to bend for the futon frame). Outer Covering is made from 100% Cotton Twill.
